When the monsoon arrives in Kerala, most homeowners switch off their air conditioners and forget about them until the summer heat returns. While this may seem harmless, prolonged exposure to humidity, rain, and coastal air can silently damage your AC system. Rust, fungal growth, water leakage, coil corrosion, and electrical failures are some of the most common problems that develop during the rainy season.
At Handy sQuad, we regularly encounter AC units that have suffered avoidable damage simply because they remained idle throughout the monsoon without proper protection. That's why we offer our Monsoon AC Protection Service — a preventive maintenance solution designed specifically for Kerala's climate.
Why Monsoon Weather Damages Your AC
The combination of heavy rainfall, high humidity, and salt-laden coastal air creates challenging conditions for air conditioners. While your AC remains switched off, moisture accumulates inside the unit, encouraging fungal growth and corrosion. By the time you switch it back on, hidden damage may already have developed.
1. Fungal Growth and Poor Indoor Air Quality
One of the most common issues during the monsoon is fungal and bacterial growth inside the indoor unit. Moisture settles in the evaporator coils, drain tray, and air passages, creating the perfect environment for microorganisms to thrive.
When the AC is switched on after months of inactivity, these contaminants can circulate throughout your home, causing unpleasant odours and potentially triggering allergies, respiratory irritation, coughing, and sneezing.
2. Rust and Corrosion on Outdoor Units
Outdoor AC units are continuously exposed to rain, humidity, and salt-rich air. Over time, these conditions accelerate corrosion on metal components, including condenser coils, brackets, screws, and protective panels.
Corrosion reduces cooling efficiency, weakens structural components, and can eventually lead to refrigerant leaks and costly repairs.
3. Water Leakage Issues
Blocked drain pipes and dirt accumulation often lead to water leakage from indoor units. During the monsoon, excess moisture and organic debris increase the likelihood of drainage problems.
Unchecked leakage can cause wall stains, damp patches, furniture damage, and mould growth inside your home.
4. Reduced Cooling Performance and Higher Electricity Bills
Humidity, dirt accumulation, and corrosion affect the efficiency of evaporator and condenser coils. As heat transfer becomes less effective, the compressor must work harder to achieve the desired temperature.
This results in increased energy consumption and higher electricity bills. In some cases, poorly maintained AC units can consume up to 30% more power than properly serviced systems.
5. Electrical Component Damage
Moisture doesn't only affect metal parts. It can also damage sensitive electrical components, including circuit boards, terminals, and wiring connections.
Electrical failures caused by moisture ingress are among the most expensive AC repairs and are often preventable through timely maintenance.
6. Unexpected Breakdowns
Many AC breakdowns occur immediately after the monsoon season when systems are restarted after months of inactivity. Components that have been affected by corrosion, moisture, or fungal buildup are more likely to fail under operational stress.
Preventive servicing significantly reduces the risk of sudden and costly breakdowns.
What's Included in Handy sQuad's Monsoon AC Protection Service?
Our service is specifically designed to address the challenges created by Kerala's monsoon climate.
Deep Cleaning and Sanitisation
We begin with a comprehensive cleaning of both indoor and outdoor units. Dirt, dust, fungal deposits, and accumulated debris are removed before any protective treatments are applied.
This includes:
Evaporator coil cleaning
Condenser cleaning
Filter cleaning
Drain tray sanitisation
Drain line flushing
Anti-Rust Treatment
A specialised anti-rust coating is applied to critical outdoor components, including:
Condenser coils
Metal panels
Brackets
Fasteners
Exposed metallic surfaces
This protective layer helps minimise corrosion caused by rain, humidity, and coastal air exposure.
Anti-Fungal Protection
Our anti-fungal treatment is applied throughout the indoor unit, including coils, drain trays, air channels, and vents.
This treatment:
Eliminates existing fungal growth
Reduces bacterial contamination
Prevents unpleasant odours
Improves indoor air quality
Coil Cleaning and Protection
Both evaporator and condenser coils receive specialised cleaning and protective treatment to maintain optimal heat transfer efficiency.
Benefits include:
Faster cooling
Reduced power consumption
Improved performance
Longer coil lifespan
AC Shutdown Service
For customers planning to keep their AC switched off during the monsoon, we perform a complete shutdown preparation process.
This includes drying internal components to eliminate trapped moisture and reduce the risk of fungal growth during extended inactivity.
Outdoor Unit Weather Protection
For units installed in highly exposed locations, we provide weather-resistant protective covers designed to shield the system from excessive rain and debris.
Electrical and Drainage Inspection
Every service includes:
Drain line inspection
Electrical safety checks
Terminal tightening
Operational testing
Performance verification
Why AC Maintenance is Especially Important in Trivandrum and Kochi
Kerala's coastal environment is significantly harsher on air conditioners than many inland regions.
Continuous humidity, heavy rainfall, and airborne salt accelerate wear and tear on both indoor and
outdoor components.
Without preventive maintenance, AC systems in Trivandrum and Kochi are more likely to experience:
Corrosion
Fungal growth
Reduced cooling efficiency
Increased electricity consumption
Electrical failures
Premature equipment replacement
Regular monsoon maintenance helps protect your investment and ensures reliable performance throughout the year.
